iZulu iliZulu liTulu

When one has as many zulu pipes as I do, it is easy to start to take them for granted - to become inured to passion for the shape. I’ve been collecting zulus for some two decades and I have examples from many makers.
Earlier this month when I was at the Chicago show and Jack Howell handed me the above-pictured pipe, I experienced that little heart-pang I feel when I encounter something that is exquisite in its totality - a pipe that just cannot be improved.
iZulu iliZulu liTulu means “heaven” or “sky” in the Bantu language of the Zulu people. Heaven is how I feel about the zulu I acquired from Jack Howell. Among the nation of zulus in my racks, Howell’s zulu is Shaka, the great Zulu king who united the Zulu peoples in 1816.
